Sights on Bornholm - guide to the beautiful island

Bornholm, Bornholm, Bornholm... You, my lovely holiday island.
You are so beautiful and there are so many things to take care of when you visit.
When we design a new poster from a city or an island, it always starts with a visit to the place. And Bornholm was no exception. It was difficult to choose exactly which attraction from the island should be portrayed, but it was the iconic smokehouses that won in the first place. See our guide to experiences and sights in Bornholm on this page.

Allinge and Sandvig - beautiful nature and hospitality

The two twin towns on the north coast of the island offer beautiful scenery and cozy shops and cafes.
You can go exploring for yourself in the small streets, on the harbor and on the beach and feel the very special atmosphere.
The hospitality is unmistakable - the two cities are used to visitors and they welcome you with open arms.

We always return to the two cities and here are our favorite attractions:

Kala's ice cream - MUMS we just say! Here you get the best ice cream and coffee

Wonderful - Time for a break. At the Nordlandet hotel, you can visit Underbar, where you can rest your legs with a delicious drink, a cozy board game and a view of the sea

The guest - The good people from Ingolf's coffee bar in Amager are behind Gæstgiveren in Allinge, which is characterized by a relaxed atmosphere with long tables, colored lamps, fantastic musical experiences and good food. Check out their program before your trip to Bornholm and experience the iconic place with your favorite artist!

Fabers - At Fabers you can get art, coffee and culture. Take a look at their cultural calendar and see if there is something for you. They hold, for example, lectures, wine tastings and concerts.

The beach in Sandvig - You will find the most popular beach on Nordbornholm in Sandvig. We can understand that, because here there are stones and there is a nice bathing bridge. You can also rent boards if you want to jump into a new sport during your visit.

Svaneke - gourmet and narrow streets

On the east coast you will find the well-known town, Svaneke. The town is buzzing with life in the summer and there are lots of small shops.
If you love delicious food and specialties (who isn't? 😉), the city is definitely worth a visit.
You will find both Svaneke Bolsjer, Svaneke Bryghus, Svaneke Ice Cream Dairy, Svaneke Chokoladeri and many other specialty establishments.
We always come home with bags full of goodies!

In addition to the many fine shops, we also always return to these places:

South-East of Paradise - At the campsite by Hulle Harbor you will find the nicest beach cafe. Here is a very special atmosphere with lots of life. You can drink a delicious cup of coffee at one of the colorful long tables, play a game of beach volleyball or jump into the water at the sandy beach.

Bonala's pizza - My mouth is watering just thinking about the delicious pizzas at Bonala's Pizza. The pizzeria focuses on good quality and local ingredients, and you can taste it. As a bonus, they have many vegetarian options!

Market days - If you are in Svaneke on a Saturday in the summer, you can experience a cozy market on the square. Explore the various stalls and discover new ones in full bloom.

The mountain town of Gudhjem

Yep, you saw right. Gudhjem can boast of being the only mountain town in Denmark, so a visit can be felt in the poles.
The town is known for its fine half-timbered houses, cozy shops and of course for the specialty Sol over Gudhjem.

The tender bars are all worth it when you've been through the city, which i.a. features these amazing locations:

Fangst - Fangst is a new, Danish brand that produces delicious fish preserves. They are based in an old fishing house by the harbor, where you can be served super delicious fish! Of course, you can also buy all the varieties to take home, so you can find the taste of your Bornholm holiday anytime.

Norresan - Really nice coffee shop a little outside the city. Norresan is located next to the water, so you can enjoy your sandwich, ice cream, coffee or drink with a beautiful view in a lovely beach chair.

Cafe Rosa - Fantastic cafe serving delicious homemade cakes that actually look homemade.

The hairpin bend outside Gudhjem - It almost speaks for itself. Look how beautiful it is! If you love road cycling, it's a great place to pedal.

Rønne - Bornholm's capital

The island's largest city offers more than the ferry's arrival hall and the airport. So don't move on too quickly when you arrive on the island.
Visit e.g. these amazing places:

Torvehal Bornholm - In a disused slaughterhouse in Rønne you will find Torvehal Bornholm. It is the island's gathering place for local produce in all its guises. Start your holiday here with a shopping trip for your holidays on the island.

Buchwald's coffee roastery - In the cozy courtyard in Torvehal Bornholm you will find Buchwald's coffee roastery. The place has absolutely fantastic coffee, of course, and the coffee is served in beautiful handmade ceramic mugs. In addition, you can also see how the coffee beans are roasted.

Arnager Røgeri - Behind the airport you will find our favorite smokehouse. It is super authentic and has such a nice location. And of course the food tastes REALLY good.

Put on your hiking boots - 2 beautiful hikes on Bornholm

The nature on Bornholm is completely unique and, in our view, this calls for hiking.
When you experience nature on foot, all your senses are activated and you can smell, listen and feel nature. Here are 2 suggestions for hiking routes on Bornholm:

Hammer knot around

The tour starts at the parking lot at Sandvig beach and ends at Opalsøen's cable car.

If you are brave, you can end the trip with a trip on the 290-metre cable car. Or you can just dip your water body in the clear water.

From Gudhjem to Heligdomsklipperne

The sanctuary rocks are a must-see if you are looking for nature experiences on Bornholm. It is a completely unique rock landscape that you will not experience anywhere else in Denmark.
The rocks are named after a spring which was believed to have healing powers - and which was therefore sacred.
You can also visit Bornholm's Art Museum, which is located by the Holy Rocks.

Other fantastic places on Bornholm

Amen then... We could go on. We fall in love with the island every time we visit and we always find new, beautiful places. So while our list will never be complete, we'll just give you some final recommendations along the way.

Smokehouses around the island - All over Bornholm you will find active and closed smokehouses. And look are just so beautiful. See e.g. the chimneys of this disused smokehouse in Listed:

Hallegaard Gårdbutik - The iconic butcher in the countryside serves delicious gourmet hot dogs and charcuterie in their farm shop. And of course you can buy all kinds of butcher's specialties. They are particularly well-known for their fantastic cured sausage!

Listed - Listed is a cozy little harbor town where you can, among other things, find the fine ceramics shops Lov i Listed and Duedahl Keramik.

Dueodde - The famous beach on the southern tip of the island is definitely worth a visit. Did you know that the sand from the beach is so fine that it is used for hourglasses?
Here you also get nice, big ice cream and the fine lighthouse is also worth a visit.

Melsted Badehotel - The fine seaside hotel serves fantastic food with a view of the sea. Here you have to book a table in advance and the price is at the more expensive end. The place is also worth visiting for the fine beach with a jetty.

We hope you have been inspired as to what you should find time to do on Bornholm. Really good trip!
